Many years ago I lived in Altrincham where there was a lovely little[I mean little] art shop which did picture framing. Within the shop were piles of drawings and paintings by students at art school in Manchester; the idea being that patrons of the shop might purchase and have them framed. We purchased about half a dozen, not being interested in painting at the time. We have two works by one artist in particular, one a large watercolour of Pott Shrigley in Cheshire and the other a coloured pencil "doodle" of [I think] Glossop. These have pride of place in our home nearly 40 years later. Some time later I came across a number of works by the same artist, by now a very successful professional artist, which were dull, static, stilted - I'm looking for the word. I wouldn 't give these later works house ropm. My question is, apart from commercial considerations, what makes an artist lose his/her pure artistic ability? I still wish I could draw/paint the way he does but something wonderful has been lost. Sketcher (lol)
