Not sure that this will be of relevance to those in the UK but for those of us outside who order supplies from Bromleys it might well be, but it is certainly interesting either way. Bromleys artists supplies have recently added a new feature to their online ordering service which mean that now, as you load your basket with goodies and declare your shipping destination, the carriage is calculated.I thought that it wasn't a big a deal to me because over the last eighteen months, I came to know my carriage costs and knew what they would be for certain orders. Imagine my surprise, shock and no small amount of anger when I discovered that in their wisdom, they have redefined how watercolour paper has been classified for years, maybe hundreds of years for all I know. It seems that there are now different weights of 140lb paper which begs the question, when is 140lb watercolour paper not 140lb.And the answer is like this- A pack of 20 sheets of 1/4 Imperial size 140lb paper made by Langtons is, according to Bromleys, heavier than either Arches, Bockingford, Saunders or Fabriano makes of the same size(excuse pun) and weight. Arches in turn, although not as heavy as Langtons, is heavier than the other three. How do I know this? Well the new fangled super dooper shipping calculator told me. Prior to the new gadget, an order of one pack of 20 sheets 140 lb and 1/4 Imp size shipped to Ireland for £5.I could if I wanted even throw in a few tubes of 5ml paint and still be under the 1kg mark. Ah but now it works differently. The past is a different country. One pack of Langtons on it's own, including packaging, weighs over 1kg, so the shipping charge is increased. Fine, new system new prices.Maybe the old way was wrong and they were losing money However, Arches 140lb is a lighter 140lb than Langtons 140lb because on it's own, it weighs under the 1kg so it is cheaper to ship than Langtons?? But it is only just lighter because if you add in one 5ml tube, you are over the 1kg.With me so far? Meanwhile, if you order Bockingford for example, you can get 45ml of paint(two 5ml tubes and a 15ml) and a packet of ink cartridges and still be under the 1kg mark. So this all means that the 140 lb papers are not in fact 140lb anymore-according to Bromleys ! Langtons weighs the most, Arches is next and it seems the other three boyos are next. Despite a number of emails back and forth, Bromleys, whilst being their usual helpful and courteous selves, are insistent on the line that they weighed everything precisely in readiness for the new system and Langtons weighs more than the others and Arches weighs a bit more than the other three mentioned.I meanwhile have weighed full packs here at home and they are all the same weight??? So there you go.If you live outside the UK and on mainland Europe, your Langtons paper will cost you more to ship.I would live with increased carriage charges if that was what had happened as after all, these computerised systems are meant to save money but to be told that one brand of 140lb paper weighs more than another, difficult to swallow.Wouldn't mind only as I said I have always found Bromleys to be great.
