I have a long list of artists that inspire me. When it comes to painting portraits or figure painting the following artists are in the top ten amongst others: Guan Weixing, Zhou Tianya and Steve Hanks.
There is very little information on the process of how Steve Hanks works. One thing is clear that it takes him a considerable amount of time to finish a painting. He has a couple of books published but they do not let you on the methods he uses and he does not give workshops.
While I was trying to find some info on Steve Hanks I have come across an interesting artist (deceased now) by the name of Andrew Wyeth. He is best known for his egg-tempera paintings. But he did work in watermedia: watercolours and gouache as well. To what degree he mixed the mediums I am not sure.
Then I have stumbled on the dry brush technique (but not as you know it) developed by Otterino de Lucchi. Watercolour paints used in the manner of oil paints or egg-tempera layers. He assigns development of his method to influence of egg-tempera techniques pioneered by Andrew Wyeth. You can find a tutorial on

Sorry I took a detour. Getting back to Steve Hanks. I would be interested to hear your suggestions on how he works.
Kind regards
Sasha
