Hello! So, a brief explanation - a long time ago me and my now-fiancée went to the Louvre. She liked one particular painting, but being the empty-headed man that I am I didn't take note of the name or artist. Fast forward several months and I'd like to get her a present - that painting, or at least a cheap knock-off that an artist I know can do for me. And herein lies the problem - I can't find the painting. In general terms it was a dark painting, mostly brown and black. The setting was a rocky coast at night. There were people drowning, laying on the coast, scattered on the rocks, etc. And ONE man, naked and standing on a rock with his hands outstretched towards the sky. The prominent features of the painting were the landscape and the rock in the middle with the person with raised hands). Dramatic depiction, courtesy of MS paint: I would appreciate any input on what painting that is or even how I can find out for myself without bothering others. Thank you in advance to anyone who tries to help! EDIT: Making the painting description more comprehensible.

Have you tried www.louvre.fr/en The search engine seems fairly decent, and they might even be able to organise a print for you.
You don't ask for much, do you? There are rather a lot of paintings that would fit that description ..... It wouldn't be one of the many versions of The Ship of Fools, would it? Anyway, I'll see if I can come up with anything as the day wears on, (and I bet we'll never find it!). Or Wreck of the Hesperus....? I like the "cheap knock-off" bit, by the way: and they say romance is dead.... http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
Try Googling Géricault, or look him up on the Louvre site - this painting of yours sounds a lot like his painting which I think he titled Méduse - it's certainly his sort of subject, and there are several paintings which might meet this description. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
alang23, yes that was the first place I went to. They have a rather limited collection on show which leads me to believe that painting was borrowed and then returned or passed on to the next museum. I've also googled every conceivable combination of "rocky coast paintings with dying people and a fabulous guy being fabulous" RobertJones, what can I say, I'm a simple man. But if you're offering I'd take a soul or two as well. I've taken a look at all your suggestions. None of them look anything like the painting I was trying to describe so it occurred to me - I'm just really bad at describing. I've updated the description of the picture in my original post and I'll post something that looks similar in concept to what that painting looked like. Thanks for the suggestions so far and hopefully you guys won't give up on me.
If you're right, it could have come from anywhere - Tretyakov Gallery, the Tate, Rijksmuseum, the list isn't endless but it's very long. You can't remember its approximate period, I suppose? It would help a little bit if we could know we were looking for an 18th century painting, for instance, although there are thousands (at least) of them. This may take a while, assuming we ever get there at all. If push comes to shove, you could always give the fiancée a print-out of that mock-up above! Of course, it might not do a lot for your marriage plans.... I have a sort of vague feeling I've seen this painting, which is exceptionally annoying because that's no help to me at all in identifying it. Was it your impression that this was a shipwreck painting - or something entirely different? Anyway, try Googling shipwreck paintings, heroic paintings, any category you can think of that might apply: although just because the painting exists, it doesn't mean it's on the internet; an awful lot isn't. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
This is one of the Forfarshire/Grace Darling paintings - there are several others, which are pretty bad if truth be told; this is one of the better ones. Don't suppose this is it? http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
That sky in the first post looks biblical, could the painting have something to do with Moses and the parting of the sea. No just spied a mast bobbing in the middle distance.

I wondering is it this .... Shipwreck off a rocky coast Wijnand Nuijen ....
'Undreds and fahsands of 'em, here's the trouble! I pity our questioner, because there are far, far too many paintings out there for any of us to be able to help him: it'll be pure luck if we actually settle on the painting he saw, which he might not have remembered accurately anyway. It would help so much if he could only remember the century from which his painting came, but it looks as if he can't. And this is a major problem. As it happens, I have a watercolour of a figure against the sea, which I've never shown here because I thought it melodramatic - modesty forbids that I should offer it to him..... but then, if money is available.... I'd do it with the figure standing on his head and juggling with a cucumber. But I'm a bit of an opportunist like that.... http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
