Bless your mum Lucy! It's always possible to organise a space for yourself, however small, so go for it. Most important thing is to get yourself painting comfortably.
I have a French easel permanently set up and I stand while painting. Got dodgy legs, but it doesn't bother me. Good luck. A pal of mine was looking for an easel, I've just given him, yes given him, all of my oil painting kit. He visited Winchester Art College and bought a new studio easel for £40. Billy bargain, but I think they'd stored it for years and never got it out.
I use a big sturdy easel in the Conservatory, complete with Daylight lamp or acrylics and oils in the Autumn and Spring. (Too hot or cold at other times.) I've also got a portable wooden tripod thing for using in classes, but I'm convinced it want to chop my fingers off, when erecting it. A table easel or board on the dining room table for watercolours in winter. In summer I sometimes use the garden table, in the great outdoors.
Mums do try..... That is a display easel, yes; you'll find it a bit wibbly-wobbly for working on, but it would cope with small things - think of it as a stop-gap until you get something a bit bigger.
Hi Lucy by far the best long-term investment is the 'Herring Versatile Easel' I've used one for years. It' is expensive but you'll get a whole lifetime's use out of it. Their very inclusive website will give full details and will list their other products. Try the following link which I trust will get you to their website. Herring Versatile Easel
Hi everyone, sorry I didn't reply to your comments sooner, I cam on yesterday and there were so many new threads and old threads up and going again that I didn't see that anyone had commented on this! (The 'Christmas' thread 100% threw me!!) Anyway... Robert / Adele - yes mum's do try that's for sure, and that's a nice idea to paint her a little something as a thank you, she loses wisteria and i have some flowering in my garden at the moment so I might have a go at painting that. And to everyone else, thank you for your advice, I'm making a little list of easels/websites to research and in the mean time I'm tentatively using the display one with the modification you suggested Syd.
