I'd welcome some practical advice re some box frame canvases that I was given that had been salvaged from a skip!! They are all to a greater or lesser extent spotted in black mould both on the canvas and wooden stretchers. Can I scrub them and dry in the sun or airing cupboard, and then emulsion the wood to cover spotting, and re gesso the canvas? Is there any thing I can use to treat the wood with? The worst ones I thought I'd take the canvas off and use a better quality canvas. A lot of the staples are rusty too! Or would I be better to chuck the whole lot out? I'd like to use them if I can if only to practice on.I'd hate to sell a painting that I wasn't confident would last..... any ideas?
I can imagine the scene now, a furtive character in dark glasses, outside the National Gallery, Psst want to buy some sable brushes, as he whips open his raincoat to reveal an array of brushes in what appears to be a brush roll sewn inside his coat. (lol)
