I'd welcome some practical advice re some box frame canvases that I was given that had been salvaged from a skip!!
They are all to a greater or lesser extent spotted in black mould both on the canvas and wooden stretchers. Can I scrub them and dry in the sun or airing cupboard, and then emulsion the wood to cover spotting, and re gesso the canvas? Is there any thing I can use to treat the wood with? The worst ones I thought I'd take the canvas off and use a better quality canvas. A lot of the staples are rusty too!
Or would I be better to chuck the whole lot out? I'd like to use them if I can if only to practice on.I'd hate to sell a painting that I wasn't confident would last..... any ideas?
