Quite possibly - don't use budget canvases, if that's what you are doing; and if you're going to paint thickly, with added mediums to increase bulk, it would probably be better to use a rigid support. Canvas will not bear excessive weight without sagging or buckling - a rigid board should be much more successful at doing so. Do bear in mind how thin canvas is - no more rigid or substantial than your shirt or blouse, really .... it won't take weight beyond its capacity to do so.
