Painting in a bar is, I should imagine, replete with difficulties - depending on the bar. Painting in a restaurant sounds a bit safer. But I sometimes feel, he said, sighing with ennui and the general thingyness of it all, that I'm just too old now to want to do this sort of thing - I don't want to be watched, or to entertain, or to get in the way; I want to shut myself away with my paint, where I can swear, curse, and mutter unencumbered....
Or in short, I haven't heard that the phenomenon has been repeated here, though wouldn't be surprised if it had. But I don't frequent bars, do sometimes go to restaurants, and in either case would have another primary purpose in mind. If anyone would do it, it would be Adebanji Alade - all those faces to sketch, intent on their lunch...
I'd do it if anyone paid me, mind.

From what I can gather the Americans invite people to what looks almost like a tupperware party with paints instead of tupperware. It is not free. You have to book a ticket. Some 30-40 people must make them enough money to make it worth their while and pay a tutor. Here is a story about the UK branch http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/news/business/upton-artist-launches-american-paint-8358511
