I have just noticed that someone is using this site as a platform to market his hand painted reproductions. Is this really the sort of place to do this? I think not, but do others agree? Apart from the inappropriateness for this site, the legality is dubious. Copyright lies with the original painter and if he/she is dead then copyright could lie with the photographer or owner of the original painting. If you want to look, he is posting reproductions of old masters in the gallery and started a blog.
Yes I noticed Splosh and have commented as such on one of his "masterpieces". I didn't realise he has started a blog as well. I don't think it is allowed on this site irrespective of the Copyright issue.
This isn't a sales site surely?
He's using the free facility of the site for advertising - which should more properly be in the magazines, although I don't honestly think that artists are likely to be buying reproduction oil paintings or prints. No, it's not a copyright issue - mind you, he'd get a nasty shock if Leonardo came back and sued him; and he wouldn't be alone - but it is an abuse of the facility offered here, in my opinion. I know advertising is expensive for individuals, but running two magazines and a huge website isn't exactly cost free, either. If I were Dawn, I'd remove the posts - unless this gentleman DOES also trouble to pay for his advertising. Incidentally, I see our RS Gold chums are back on the blog page - Lord knows what they're getting out of it (but I wish they'd get out of it). http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
I wouldn't be at all surprised Pat, being the old cynic that I am.
