We've been scouring through our very long history (all the way back to 1931) and Charlotte has put together this fascinating timeline https://www.painters-online.co.uk/aboutthe-artist-leisure-painter-and-painters-online How far back can you remember us? Share your memories with us - we'd love to hear!
Good question - I think my earliest acquaintance was with LP, when - now here's a struggle with memory..... was it F C Johnson, Fred Johnson? was editor.  I had his very useful book - sold it years ago, having digested it again and again: and like a lot of other books I sold, I now wish I hadn't.  Ah well.  Anyway, this looks like a chronicle I should much enjoy: busy right now, but will certainly have a good wallow in the history when we get to the weekend.
I remember my dad taking The Artist magazine back in the late 50s and 60s. He was a big fan of Rowland Hilder who I believe featured regularly? I can also remember the rather plain covers like the one above for 1952. I have subscribed to TA for about ten years, and it has certainly changed a lot.
It was interesting to look at the timeline. I haven't been a member as long as some but I do enjoy looking through the older issues of the magazines on Studio. The members are always helpful. The tips and techniques section has been useful and educational. The exercises that are provided in the magazines and on Studio are very good and well explained. I first did a demonstration of Alan's when I first took up oil painting and now I'm doing my own study of Caravaggio. None of it possible, without all I have learned here from POL and its members.
I was reading LP when Jane Stroud was the editor. Later, I remember some of us were not pleased when the online format changed….then of course it changed again and we all adapted, though ,it has to be said, not all aspects are improvements. C’est la vie! I still look forward to the mags dropping on the doormat.
