One of the problems I have with postings on POL is that nearly all the comments are very gentle ( like it a lot, love your use of colour, great composition etc etc). and rarely do they offer any criticism. I am as guilty as anyone of falling into this trap. Perhaps we are all wary about hurting the feelings of others or we are concerned that there will be a backlash when we post our next picture. No doubt such comments are encouraging to the artist (and we all enjoy the occasional ego boost) but they rarely serve any purpose in helping the artist to reappraise his/her work and/or see something that they may have overlooked. An active discussion , when it does occur, can be both informative and instructive and can be of benefit to everyone. It also brings home the fact that we are all different and have many views and opinions about painting. However it is also brave of an artist to actually seek constructive criticism - I must admit I have never sought it in any of my postings and perhaps I will do so in future postings. Perhaps we should all ask for comments in our postings. Maybe we should all routinely offer criticism when posting comments, it might not always make us popular but it could prove helpful and beneficial to all. The trouble is, (if criticism has not been asked for) I am not sure if I am brave enough to offer it. Has anyone else any views on these matters?
