Only the latest images added can be selected for the top panels which means some works may be missed which might otherwise appear in the selection panels. We had to determine a number of images which we felt might be added daily to pull through, this estimate is fairly accurate, however evenings, weekends and holidays mean that some images, which may otherwise be selected, are missed. The shape of the images added is another factor - they do have to fit the profile of the panels to show the full work.

Although I agree with Robert that Rupert C's latest is a superb painting, I don't see why it should be an obvious choice for the top gallery? The gallery is called 'Selection from the Gallery' and not 'Best from the Gallery', so how 'good' a painting is shouldn't be the first criteria for selection as it should just reflect what has been added to the site, without an over degree of elitist judgement. If it is supposed to be the Best, then say so.
Michael, I agree that cartoons should be included, but I had mentally put them in with sketches in my comment. I should have separately defined them - sorry.
Re the response from the POL team, it seems that all we have to work out is what time of day to post and what the format of our paintings should be and we'll have it cracked and all be in with a chance. However, I have to say that I find it a weird restriction on a site to only be able to feature work which fulfills such rigid posting criteria and it almost smacks of there needing the wind being the in the right direction and there being an R in the month before your work can be considered! We used to have a rolling 'latest posted' on the old site that came up with everything and anything recently posted. I also find that paintings on the 'Selection' gallery stay there for far too long and if it really is going to be a selection then it should be constantly changing - on an almost daily basis to reflect the amount of new work added to the site. The gallery on the home page seems to be stuck in a time warp with some paintings having been there for ages too.
I get so frustrated by these galleries that I now gloss over them and only look at the main posting gallery. I don't bother much the POL's FB page now for the same reason. If it had more gallery work on it then I would probably view it daily.

I am one of those many, I suspect, people who took up art only after retirement. I really enjoy the pol site and have been pleased to receive many words of wisdom from those of you who are more experienced. And I have been delighted to see my efforts up online, scary and sometimes embarrassing as it is. To me an appearance in the top gallery appears to some sort of reward for those who are the more professional painters. Not for the likes of me !
However, it is a site for all of us, even if we don't paint or draw daily but find it a fascinating hobby to pick up now and then and our work may not be ...
(I can't find the right word here as I think everyone's work, into which who knows how much effort has gone, has equal value). So I would prefer not to have the top gallery if it is to remain elitist and exclude certain styles and topics.
This is my first visit to the forum - I was directed here by a comment below a picture. Thanks for those comments everyone and for sharing your pictures.

The clue is in the name. It is called 'Selection from the Gallery' not 'The Best from the Gallery'. At the moment it appears to be called 'Selection from the Gallery' but is actually showcasing what whoever chooses the work for the top gallery thinks is the 'best' work from the gallery. I think the purpose of this gallery is confused and confusing and could do with some clarification.

From Dawn's earlier reply I think we are stuck with the selection without a redesign of the site. This being so it would be appreciated, I guess by the majority of us, if the selection panel chose a representative selection rather than be influenced by personal likes. It would then become more representative of the content of the gallery. I agree that some clarification would be helpful but that goes for many aspects of the new site much of which remains a mystery to me.
