I hesitate to start 2014 by raising the topic of digital painting after all the adverse comment expressed on the Forum in the past. I rook a recent look at the National Gallery website to see details of the current exhibition ‘Facing the Modern: the Portrait in Vienna 1900’. As ever I was tempted into the Books section and under ‘Materials and Techniques’ discovered a new paperback ‘iPad for Artists’ which the postman dropped through my letterbox today. I found it fascinating but then I’m an iPad addict so I would wouldn’t I. I can well understand that artists who’ve painted in traditional media for years – and I’m one – find digital methods difficult to come to terms with. Nevertheless I think ‘The Artist’ would do well to try and attract younger readers with occasional articles on sketching with laptops and electronic tablets. After all if the National Gallery is promoting the iPad it’s welcome recognition.
