I went to Nature in Art today to meet Shelly Perkins who is a Digital Painter and the current artist in residence. She uses her own line drawings and watercolours to create her digital artwork. Each one is scanned onto a separate layer in Adobe Photoshop. This leaves her free to move the layered images around, resize, or adjust colour. She can also add drawn marks with Photoshop's digital brushes. Each of those processes requires artistic judgment and skill. Digital painting is not confined to picture making on an iPad it has many more applications. Go to Shelly's website to see the range her digital creativity. You will find her work quite different from the garish colour saturated ouput produced by the iPad. But then let's not be too hasty to condemn - Matisse handled strong colour very well diidn't he? http://www.shellyperkins.co.uk/
