I've just bought some tubes of Winsor and Newton Artists' oil paints. I use a six colour paint system. W & N recommend that the blue green colour should be Winsor Blue. I know that Winsor Blue is an intense cold blue green, which can dominate the painting unless it's used with care. I've no problem using it for greens and dark greys. I'm still not sure the best way of using it to represent a cool sky blue. Ultramarine Blue is often too blue violet to represent the sort of skies we get in Britain. Mixed with white, Winsor Blue is too bright for a sky. I've tried painting various swatches of combinations with other colours. So far, the best combination seems to be to add a small amount of Winsor Blue to a larger amount of Ultramarine blue, and then add plenty of white. Has anybody any suggests for the colours to combine with Winsor Blue to get a convincing sky?
