In a book I have by R O Dunlop, RA (Teach Yourself Books, around 1970) the claim is made that you should not mix Ultramarine with Flake White.  I took that on trust for years, but - when Ultramarine was introduced, and then synthesized in the 19th century, Flake White was all that was on offer.  Quite possibly, Ultramarine was glazed over a base of Flake White rather than actually mixed with it: but does anybody out there actually KNOW?  <div>If so, pray reply - there must be some literature on this, somewhere....  I haven't managed to find it as yet.  </div><div> </div><div>I do mix Ultramarine with Flake White - has the pigment changed, in either case, over the years?  What was the problem?</div><div> </div><div>Yours,   Worried, Isle of Wight.</div>
