Hello oilies, I picked up an A3 pack of Daler Rowney Oil Painting board this week (in a sale!) I remember Robert's recommendation of this surface.  On inspection it doesn't indicate if it's universally primed, gessoed etc.  It states "durable boards laminated with Georgian oil paper"  Does this mean I ought to gesso? I think I used an A4 pack with Acrylics before, just trialling and messing.
You can, but if it's labelled as Oil painting board, it will be suitable for oil - but not for acrylic, which will just peel off.
Thanks Robert, I was mistaken. I've hunted around and found that the A4 pack is Georgian Oil paper, a very old inherited pack, that I haven't used yet. I could experiment on that to see if it needs gesso.
It doesn't, but you could add a layer if you'd like to adjust the surface.  You could also adhere the paper to an archival quality board (got to be an appropriate adhesive): it's quite an attractive surface, as I remember.  If the paper is VERY old, you'd be better not adding "gesso", ie acrylic priming: maybe a coat of lead white instead, if you have any.
