I have a problem with linen canvas that I just bought, the product details below:
Products Base Final
1 x 533 Universal Primed Medium Finest Italian Linen 399gm : 210cm Width
Canvas: 100% Linen
Priming: Universal Primed
Texture: Medium Grain
Width: 210cm
Weight: 399gsm
I figured that it said it was "Universal Primed" so thought that if it’s primed I could just use the linen it straight away. So I just started to paint on it, taking it straight from its package.
I painted with oil paint heavily diluted in white spirit and the paint absorbed straight into the linen. This absorption made the linen surface paler than my intention so I had to make more of the oil in order to cover the area I planned.
It has just occurred to me that this is the first time that I’ve used linen. Previously I’ve used shop bought canvasses, already primed and ready to paint directly on to them.
Therefore I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this situation. An artist friend of mine has suggested that I could add a “coat of something on it that is transparent” to prevent absorption. Also she suggested that the use of white spirit to dilute my oil may have been a problem.
Any advice would be great thanks!?
