I never had any luck with wooden sketching-type easels, but am very pleased with my red metal [3-legged] sketching easel which I picked up second hand at a car boot sale a few years ago for £5 ! an absolute bargain. This easel is very stable and strong, with NO WOBBLES, and there is nothing to come undone on it like on the wooden easels. It's a bit late if you already have a wooden one, but for anyone wondering what sort to buy I would recommend the metal one.

Winsor & Newton easels are normally excellent quality, I have used two of there wood Table easels for calligraphy for several years without problems.
One has had modifications to the available angles and is still stable.
A larger Wood Hamilton studio Easel has also stood up to constant use without problems.
Take it back or contact W/N I'm sure they will sort it out.
It should be stable.

In the 80's I tried every type of easel available in wood and they were all a pain in the you know what...then I found a wonderful metal one with telescoping legs and from then on no problems...as for the Windsor and Newton I would take it back and send an email to them as well...why pay a lot of money for something that is just as bad as one that costs less
