For better or for worse, because I've just spent £45 on three tubes of paint - from the Supreme Paint Company, which is usually my first port of call; but logging into my account there, I realize how mean I've been - my last order was made almost a year ago...  Well, enough of saving money, and ekeing out the paint, squeezing every last drop from the tube: what am I saving my money for anyway, my funeral?  I won't even BE there... Even then, I haven't bought more Viridian, since a single tube would have cost me the equivalent of my whole order (I know I can get it cheaper, but "it" is unlikely to be real viridian: more likely to be Pthalo Green, not very artfully concealed).  So I bought Nikosia Green instead - not remotely the same colour, but a genuine earth pigment I've not used before; Ultramarine Red Shade; and - the ever reliable Yellow Ochre.  Do not expect miracles, they're not on offer from this quarter, but I've got new canvases, I'll soon have the paint - all I need is to go out and find a subject before the leaves turn, or just after they do.   Point of this post?  Well, it's this; for three tubes of paint, this is a fair amount of money when you're on a pension - and I know the price puts some people off, or prompts them to abandon oils, or the more expensive pigments (these three aren't among the more expensive, either).  If it's worth spending a portion of my remaining years on, though - I don't want to be struggling with inferior products, and you shouldn't either.  Go without something else - there's always a saving to be made; and it is worth it, even if you never reach and never will reach the standard you crave.  But thank goodness I'm not married!  Can you imagine the conversation?  "You spent WHAT on paint?  What are we going to eat this week, water-biscuits?" You don't need that sort of negativity in your life!  Get the paint - go on, get spending!
