David is an old friend of mine, and a very busy man who works far too hard - so when he visits the forum he doesn't like to get in to too long an exchange of views; nor, by the way, is he fantastically interested in the technical questions himself, so to some extent those responding to him were preaching to the choir.... he only had one question, which related to mixing greys with his paint rather than one of the several other methods; but we diverged a bit.
On the broader question, I agree with what Sandra is saying - we do need to cover all aspects of painting if we can, even the bits that bore the fetching undergarments off some of us - I know there's a view that new painters, who are most likely to benefit from the forum, don't want to know all this technical stuff, but some do; and anyway, I hope we wouldn't restrict ourselves just to new painters, given however old and gnarled we are (or experienced might be a more diplomatic word) we're all learning, all the time: I know I am - and now and then, I unlearn things I thought I'd learned before, when they don't actually match up to the practical activity of painting. I think it's good to explore these things now and then, without turning the forum into a laboratory or academic institution.
Especially because there really isn't any other forum in this country at least which offers us this opportunity - those who have visited Wet Canvas in the USA will know that it can be a free-for-all, in which dodgy advice is sometimes traded; those who belong to other forums may find that they just recycle the same old questions while never delving deeper than a puddle's depth. We do try to cover all bases that we reasonably can here, and I hope will continue to.
