You are right to a certain extent Sara but if you notice on the videos, the artists say that they don't really know how it will exactly turn out. Sometimes you just have to experiment and make your own notes as you go along. Take it from someone who spent years reading art books and never actually doing it - what a waste of time. As for fun and imagination and using tricks and gimmicks, what on earth is wrong with that Syd. It's about what makes you happy. Art should be joyful. If you want to learn how to paint pictures then books and colour charts and the whole proper art instruction is the way to go but let's also have fun!
Actually Donna, I think this technique might suit you well. Have a go and let's see the results.

I think I know what you mean, there, Syd. No, I wouldn't call if "fun" exactly either - though wouldn't want to get too particular about a word. You can enjoy your work, which I sometimes did and sometimes didn't, and find it rewarding and satisfying, but one didn't go into the office every day with a song on the lips and the occasional giggle (well: not usually anyway). Because as well as everything else one gets from painting, it's still work - accompanied by the fear of failure or just inadequacy. Pleasure is there to be had - fulfillment when and if it goes well: but it still leaves me tired and, when painting in oil especially, the chore of cleaning up afterwards.
But we wouldn't do it if we didn't have to - and there's a joy in that because it gives meaning to life.
