</div><div>Take a look at this - it would have been a quick sketch, using just a few colours: you can see the burnt sienna underpainting, the quite thin white used for the clouds, which would have been built up later if he'd worked further on the study, the masses roughed in for the trees, foliage and ground - it would be a good exercise to try this yourself, and build it into a full-scale painting: it shows that Constable didn't just plough straight in with thick paint, he worked it up. It's one thing to know that, but something else, and much more valuable, to have this painting demonstrate it. </div>
