My favourite painting surface at the moment is the Classico linen canvas by Gerstaeker, available from Great Art. It has a lovely fine weave surface, just the right amount of spring and is a joy to use and at a reasonable price for a linen canvas.. Only trouble is, they will insist on putting tacks in the side. Now these are obviously cosmetic as the fabric is stapled onto the back of the stretcher and (really dumb this) the tacks are put in after the canvas has been shrink wrapped, which means you always had annoying bits of plastic clinging under the studs after you have ripped it off. I was prepared to put up with this because otherwise they are excellent, so I was pleased to see in the latest Great Art newsletter that Gerstaeker have now dropped the tacks from the sides because so many people complained about them, including me. This makes this canvas just about perfect in my view and I can now wholeheartedly recommend them to all oil painters.Punter pressure works!
