Got it, I think - yes, Frank Auerbach. Paintings you could pick up by the impasto.... I know what you mean about the cost of Ampersand boards, but you bought them, so come on - slosh the paint on..... I bought a couple earlier this year, and I've only used one of them so far; basically, therefore, I'm the same as you..... too precious about them. But I was very pleased with the surface for a recent oil painting; I've wondered whether I want to paint another oil or use acrylic on the remaining one, and can't make my silly mind up! So the best thing will be to invest in half a dozen of them, so I can do both.

Completely different experience - they're also better made than any MDF panel, either bought for the specific purpose or made up yourself.
