I suppose that in the end of the day, the only thing any of us can talk about with any authority is our own experience, as everyone has an opinion and sure we know what they say about opinions . Maybe the birds do get involved in stretching paper and when they comment here I will certainly be interested.
In the meantime, sure we'll all do our best and maybe those who who feel, for whatever reason, that not stretching watercolour paper before use is the only way to go, or is only for whatever animals, mammals and any other creatures of the earth you can think of, might be a little patient with those of us who so far haven't become as evolved as they ?

Patience, Larry, is a virtue! And not one given to all.... How true those words are. even today.

You'll all be beside yourselves with glee and envy to hear that in the end I just left the paper alone last night, and this morning all the cockling had gone: it was stretched, after a fashion, with masking tape, and before going to bed last night I unstuck one end and just pulled it taut before replacing the tape. But it might have sorted itself out anyway without any help from me. A bit of a relief, because it's a commission and I've only got one day to finish it in.
So what am I doing on here.......?

Finished it! Not even had the time to assess whether it's any good or not...
Final thought on stretching - for some of us, it's all part of the ritual: the paper taped to the board, water applied, waiting for it to dry, having a flat sheet of paper to work on: how necessary it is may not even be the question, given plenty of watercolours have been painted out of doors in sketch-books, with no possibility of stretching at all ...
But it does give you a rather effective border for your work - just be careful, if using masking tape, how you remove it..

Just come in for a coffee break - having been painting - when a thought came to me. Using minimum 240lbs paper I don't even bother to fix it to the board by any means - that way I can turn just the paper to do odd bits which I need to approach from a different angle. My board, by the way, is mounted at an angle of about 15% which I find just right for watercolour.

do what some do,,wet lightly , stretch your bocking ford 150 over a cheap oil frame staple at the back..let dry , do you painting get some liquitex varnish and a small roller and give it a coat or two they say it brings out the colours and looks same as an acrylic ,and gives a nice texture . .
saves mounting it to,, .eeeeeeeeeee whose a little tight rrrrrrs
