I`ve been teaching some youngsters basics - and was surprised that they hadn`t covered it at school.
None knew pencils came in different `strengths` (H/B), none had used charcoal, or knew about blending for tone, or understood how the light works with a sphere. They all used outlines and didn`t know how to indicate masses.
It isn`t lack of ability - they all grasped the ideas quickly and enjoyed it. So why isn`t drawing taught?
When I was at school (around 1066 according to Dennis) we spent hours learning to laboriously produce detailed drawing, using light and shade. While I can see that was a bit OTT it shouldn`t be that hard to teach a basic grasp of drawing. If you can write, you can draw!

Lizzie if you want a book to die for, have a look at " Dance of the brush" by Ralph Thompson. It is truly beautiful, not a "How to do it book" just a book to look at and enjoy. he illustrated Gerald Durells animal books. Try googling it and have a look. Sometimes you learn more by looking at a very gifted artists work than a step by step guide.
