We have heard of those who, when visiting an artists' shop can’t resist buying a new tube of paint which most likely they didn't know they needed. Art books, well yes I must confess to being a sort of collector and some books I still haven’t got around to reading. Then there have been requests for back copies of art magazines and of course, there are brushes. I guess we all have more brushes than are really needed. Many were bought on impulse or because we thought it to be a good idea at the time but it is unlikely that we will ever have cause to make good use of them all. There are pads of different papers with only a couple of sheets used that hopefully could have done justice to our watercolours or drawing and how many sketching books have you in use at the moment.

Perhaps you did not know that you were a collector of artists’ things until you gaze upon your bunches of brushes poised vertically in jars or the tubes of paint hidden from your conscience inside boxes. Those books that I have treasured or still need to read, can I personally justify keeping them all by believing that they have or will improve my ability to paint? But aren’t all these the essential things, the tools, materials and paraphernalia that enables us to make the best use of what artistic skill and experience we are fortunate to have?

I have no real regrets about what I have allowed to accumulate, apart from a few bad buys. How about you? What have you collected or accumulated. What large selection of a particular item do you feel to be necessary for your art and do you collect anything special?
