I am going to paint a dog but being a bit of a novice , I just cannot work out what colours I need to use, please any help??
For a golden haired dog, raw sienna is a good base, and you can adjust that ad lib - establish your base tones with the raw sienna, a good, transparent colour, add burnt sienna, and mix the latter with ultramarine, and off you go. Practise your colours on a bit of scrap paper until you develop some confidence with your colours.   Colour mixing will benefit you well - don't add your opaque colours until you're well aware of the effects you want on your practise paper: avoid opaque colours like yellow ochre or light red until you're ready to add them, add very small quantities of black or Payne's Grey, or a mix of burnt sienna and ultramarine -  always start with the light and work you way through to the darks: don't try to get the base colour right in one go, build it up: but starting with raw sienna on the base of your drawing in darker tones - it's much easier to demonstrate this than to explain it, but that's how  I'd start.   Get your basic drawing right before you add colour, because if that doesn't work, no amount of additional colour will help.
Many thanks for your advice, I have started painting and feel more confident with what you have told me, fingers crossed it works out!
