The Sunday Times art journo Richard Brooks in BiteBack queries how Una Stubbs got one of her mediocre works into the RA Summer Ex.
A naff portrait of Graysom Perry lools more like her he says.He hopes she would have picked up skills from presenting the BBC painting programme.
I am glad he has published that.

Poor old Una - she got clobbered for her slightly "ooh, golly gosh!" performance on the painting challenge prog (I plead guilty), and now for her own painting. I'd be inclined to lighten up on the latter - portraits so often do look a bit like the painter rather than the subject, she's not the first to fall into that trap. And at least she has a go. I blame the celebrity culture more than Una Stubbs - if she's really not up to exhibiting in prestigious surroundings, it does her no favours to pretend she is, and exposes her to rather unkind criticism.
Talking of unkind, and not wishing to let my many admirers down, I should be amazed if anyone had, pace Mr Brooks, picked up any skills from presenting the BBC painting programme.

Didn't see the painting in question, and missed the Sky programme on the RA Summer Exhibition, so cannot comment on the merits or otherwise of Una Stubbs' effort. I do however have some sympathy for Una for the caustic comments she generated for the BBC Painting Challenge and now for her RA portrait. It seems everyone is a critic and as far as I am aware she doesn't profess to be a professional or have any special talent, perhaps some of the comment is generated by the green eyed monster at the position she is in to have her work exhibited in such a prominent way?
Her manner can be a little irritating but I can think of many artists local to be whose work I don't admire and irritate me much more than Ms Stubbs. Perhaps live and let live? There is room for all in the art world.
