I have long had a passing interest in the way fashion and culture are conspiring together to gradually infantise the population to keep them docile and easier to manipulate, for instance the way grown men's summer fashion of shorts, trainers tee shirts with cartoons and baseball hats makes them look like overgrown toddlers, womens fashion the same, (Boden etc is just 10 year old girls fashions in larger sizes), programmes in which grown men rush around in fast cars and play with toys, women's obsession with cupcakes and chocolate and Hollywood churning out a succession of CGI heavy films usually featuring comic book superheroes, you can probably think of other examples . Anyway, the purpose of my diatribe is to note the gradual increase in the number of artists producing art that is essentially cartoons, usually twee little animals, cute little houses in toytown landscapes or cartoon figures with grinning faces. So OK, I don't blame them following the money, they do it because it is popular and that is my point. The great unwashed think that this is what art is, and buy it usually I suspect to decorate the nursery or child's bedroom because THAT IS THE PROPER PLACE FOR ART! A local gallery which shows this stuff turned mine down because it was "too deep" ! My bowls and bottles too deep! I ask you! I often wonder what Rembrant's or Van Gogh's reaction would have been if they had had to earn their money by painting pictures to hang in the kiddies bedroom.... there seems on a local level to be few interested in art that has a seriousness of purpose, a desire to communicate, to share an idea, it has got to be frivolous, twee and superficial.. or perhaps that is just where I live... any thoughts on art or culture generally catering for the childish mentality?
