The Old Masters....What did they have which is missing today? Will any modern works attain the same prominence as theirs? What has set them apart...or has it? I ask this because they seem closeted in a mystique of greatness which lesser artists may not aspire to...... Is it because they enjoyed the patrony of wealthy families, and without that patronage, would their work have been brought to prominence? Did it all come come down to commerce or status symbols, eventually?
