I don’t think things have changed much.  Years back, maybe 30, I was making character figures (air dried clay, painted with enamel paint, and given a coat of high gloss vanish).  I went to several craft fairs, paid for my table, sold a few…not many…just about covered my costs.  I needed to mass produce the figures, couldn’t be bothered with that.  So my interest in figurines faded.  Tried it with paintings once.  People seemed interested, but no takers.  There’s things you WANT and things you NEED, right now most people are struggling with the ‘needs’. Despite all that, the arts and craft fairs are still going.  Somebody must be making money…the hall owners mostly, I guess.
Here’s a little story from way back involving “figurines”. For the school fair I was making “The Snowman” ( yes, from the film) with salt dough and painting them. I called them “ Cloth Capo di Monte”. I had some dough left but had to go out so left my husband and son to finish off. When I got back I was confronted with rows of “dog poo”, all ready to paint. They thought it was a great idea. Well they were right because they flew off the shelves. I’m not suggesting you do something similar Peter.
Well if I get desperate I'll know what to do Marjorie!  I had one myself as a child, it was very realistic and people always reacted when I picked it up.
Yes, I had one too, along with stink bombs, pretend cigarettes and inkblots, rubber pencils and itching powder. I was a very refined child….
