I saw the first episode last night. The subjects that the artists were given were quite difficult, The artists were divided into two groups and each was given a still life. The composition of the objects on the table was boring, and the background was a scruffy gold velvet curtain. Not at all inspiring but that might have been part of the test. The second test was to paint a mock up of the interior of a room. One was was based on Van Govh's room at Arles with the bed and the yellow chair. The other was a modern bedroom, mainly in muted blues and greys taken from a painting by Roy Lichtenstein. The artists were asked to consider perspective, composition, arrangement of items on the canvas, and their own personal vision. Pretty hard to do in a 6 hour session while the cameras were filming. It's worth watching.
Damn', two threads on the same subject..... But never mind. There were so many snags with this programme, and you could see they'd made alterations to the format in response to criticism of the last time around, when the long and the short of it, Bacon and Stubbs, presented. But my own impression was that the presenters - the new ones aren't much better - weren't the major problem; in a way, squeaky Una distracted one's attention from what was, and that's just the format. Give it time, but I can't help feeling it's going to need rather more than that if it's to be worth watching. I didn't see the Sky competition, but already it's achieved praise in contrast with this one.
