Hi, I have a client who wants a painting done in "subtle colours" to me this means pastel type colours, something without too much contrast, I wondered what others thoughts on this were? In case i`m off the mark lol, look forward to your thoughts, Stuart

Might or might not mean pastel (helpful that, isn't it? Really gives you a steer.....). I think of subtle colour being, basically, not obvious - so desaturated; not primary colours, but atmospheric if you're painting figuratively; quiet; restrained (which happens to be the sort of painting I like myself - I'm not keen on brash, even though that's what seems to be in fashion). So subtle could just as easily mean dark, powerful, understated as pastel - think of Rothko in abstract, and Corot if figurative. I would have thought that it would be subtle changes in colour as opposed to high contrast. Best of luck!
