I have just built a car port and the street (a close actually so not prominent) sid is horizontal shiplap I have painted black. Not an experienced artist myself so looking for ideas to give the boards a lift. The area is 5m x 2m, quite large, but not necessarily looking to cover the whole surface. Any suggestions for me to go on and links to images much appreciated. Maybe just some splashes of wood colouring in an abstract way with a large paint brush would be a start. No statement of course. Thinking laterally.... like something to paste on or a large template to guide my unsteady hand. Thanks.

Not something that most of us on here have experience of doing, though some might.  You'd need to use a paint  (or stain) which could stand weather and wear....    a form of acrylic emulsion, perhaps;  basic  house paint - artist quality paints would be unlikely to stand up well.  As for templates - lettering templates are presumably available, although  I don't know where you'd get them.  Paint from spray cans seems to hold up (sometimes distressingly) well - and you can overpaint with it, if your first designs don't appeal..
