I'm looking for an 'economic' source of frames for oil paintings on boards the following sizes: -
24" x 20" (610mm x 508mm) 20" x 16" (508mm x 406mm) 18" x 14" (457mm x 356mm) 16" x 12" (406mm x 305mm)
These are what I would have thought were a kind of 'industry standard' being made by Daler and the usual suspects plus The Range and Hobbycraft. However frames to fit them are anything but industry standard. To be fair by looking around I can find some frames to fit some of these sizes but there does not seem to be a mass of supplies of standard frames to fit the standard size boards. I can use different suppliers to cover most of the sizes and get custom frames made but I am surprised that there is no supplier to cover the whole range of standard size boards. I suspect I'm missing something obvious!?!
I don't think you ARE missing anything obvious - the trouble with supplying non-standard size frames is that it's not necessarily economical for frame suppliers, since many of us do paint to specified sizes.  But I should take a look at - Woodware Workshops; Eze-frame; Ashcraft Framing; to name but three - there are others.  Some will make customized frames for you, if you ask them (especially Ashcraft).  Also, both Jacksons and Gerstaecker (Great Art can find them more quickly) provided a good range, when I last looked.  The downside with any of these is that their ranges are limited, but nowhere near so limited as they used to be.  Building up a good relationship with a professional framer can pay many dividends - constant streams of work can lead to attractive discounts; and you can learn to frame your own pictures - I say that, mind you, knowing I'd make a huge hash of it - it took me three terms in woodwork to graduate beyond a tent-peg, and I don't want my painting framed at crazy angles, so I leave it to the pros.  Another point - a framer, a really good framer, often has a far better idea than the artist will have about the perfect frame for their picture; so I wouldn't be deterred by price; those of us who use professional framers, as I have done, build the cost into the price of the painting; the only reason I don't do that now is that I'm not selling many paintings!  (Modesty insists I add that I'm not really trying to .... believe that or not as you will.)
I have recently bought some black frames from The Range to match 20 x 16 paintings.  Some without mounts and some with.  The one with the mount (Product code: 199331) is suitable for 20 x 16 with mount and 24 x 20 without and costs £10.49. Without the mount 20 x 16 (Product code: 161890) costs only £6.49 but is also available 16 x12.  At the moment the website says some of these are out of stock but some weeks ago when it said this I did find some in store, although the last time I looked they had all gone (Swindon).  Forget the negative reviews, as long as you look them over and remove staples carefully they are incredible value and can be used either with or without the glass.  Okay, they may not be the absolute best but for the price they are brilliant.
Thanks, interesting.  I have looked at The Range but found they only did a couple of sizes. Maybe I need more than one supplier! I'm also wondering if I should simply use boards to match available frames.
That’s good thinking.  Finding the right size frames can be a nightmare and having them custom made is very expensive.

Two points re The Range website.  Firstly it automatically  filters for only available items, so unclick that box to see the full normal range.  Secondly it only shows the one frame and size and only when you click on it do you see all the sizes available.  Unfortunately I think Covid has meant that at the moment many frames are unavailable.  But if you have a shop within travelling distance it could be well worth a trip to see the large range of frames they have (at least Swindon does). It's about a 25 mile trip for me but well worth it for all the different frames they have.
