I think all these comment go to show that all of us had a dormant artistic leaning and it took something to awaken it. It might have been an interest as a child, an inspirational teacher at school, an artist in later life, or just a sudden desire (as in my case) to learn to paint.
I think everyone has an artist in them (even although a lot of people would deny this) and it just takes a trigger for it to emerge. For some people that trigger never happens and they don't bother.
I would have loved to play a musical instrument and I am sure that, as in art, there is a lurking musician somewhere in me, but I haven't ever had that trigger moment, so I haven't ever learned.
I think this is why I think it is so important for children to have as many opportunities as possible just in case they unearth a desire or talent to do something. I used to let my girls try anything they wanted on the basis that if you start young you have the advantage. We ended up with lots of defunct musical instruments abandoned after a couple of terms of lessons, jodphurs and riding hats left over from the dozen lessons on horse riding, etc, but at least they had a go and found out if they wanted to progress a skill.
My regret is that I didn't keep drawing, as I had done endlessly as a child, and that I didn't get into painting earlier too. But then, my trigger moment wasn't there so I didn't. It only came four years ago.
