I have a preference for ivory or grey, but it depends a bit on the subject; black would be OK for a very strong drawing.

Always go for ivory or white: coloured mounts are never a good idea.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. I'll try the grey Robert and if I don't like it I'll do Ivory.

There is a program on TV tomorrow about Royal artists, Prince Charles being the presenter. He is of course a dab hand at watercolours himself, I've seen some of his work at the RWS exhibitions.
