Spent yesterday morning trying out some soluble wax crayons which I won some time ago. The term seems illogical but hey ho! They are vibrant in colour ( Caran d’Ache ) and pleasant to move around. You can also “lift” the colour. Useful to use if you’re out and about and you can  use water on them later. Below is my rather heavy handed try out. Has anyone else used them? Sorry if it’s a bit blurred.
That is gorgeous Marjorie. Are these the same as Caran d'Ache soluble oil pastels? If so I have used them but only with paint.
Marjorie, I think 'heavy handed' is a little exaggeration. Those Sweet Peas (?) look very delicately done to me, can'f believe that would be possible with wax crayons.
Marjorie, do you mean the Caran d’Ache Neocolour II water soluble wax pastels?  I’ve had a set of these for years and use them a lot, mostly with watercolour.  As you say, you can use them dry or with added water when the colour really comes alive, a bit like using Inktense colours except, as you say, you can lift the colour off with water if you want.  I’ve recently used them dry on top of a watercolour base for a horse portrait.  I was getting nowhere painting it in watercolour, so when it was dry I used the pastels (dry) on top and was surprised at the result.  They are so versatile, I wouldn’t be without mine.  Lovely colours in your sweet peas.

Sandra - no, they are not oil pastels, no oil in them. Tony, you are too kind.😁
That’s a wonderful horse painting Jenny. Yes, just had a look, they are neocolour. Inktense are a bit garish I think, but these aren’t, despite the name. I’ll certainly use them side by side with watercolour.
This is another where I wanted to tone down a watercolour painting and went over it all with the Neocolour II wax pastels (using them dry) to soften it up.  I’ve got a set of 84 and really recommend them.

Pastels Jenny? Are these different from the soluble wax?  Sorry! I assumed they were called crayons…just looked, they are wax pastels.

No, it’s the same thing, they just call them water soluble wax pastels.  (They do, though, also have a range called Neopastel which is a soft oil pastel.)

Interesting, just went to look at the ones I have from my mothers collection.  They're called Neocolour I , water-resistent pastels.  I never tried them yet. Confusing.
Just to confuse things further, the Caran d’Ache website actually describes Neocolour II as water soluble wax oil pastels - the tin they come in just describes them as water soluble wax pastels.

Lovely work Marjorie and Jenny. Whether they are oil or wax! Definitely confusing, I have some and had thought of them as water soluble oil pastels, sounds like I was wrong about this.
