Hi, in case anybody is not aware, the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year started on Sky Art this week and Portrait Artist of the Week starts on Sky's Facebook page tomorrow morning at 10 am. Sky Arts is now on Freeview, so getting to see it properly for the first time.
Did anybody see it this week? Also, anybody going to join in tomorrow?

Hi Margaret. I did see the first episode this week and really enjoyed it. I may have a look today if I remember! I’ve also watched some of the older Landscape Artist episodes which were repeated during lockdown. I’m just not painting at present, and finding it difficult to do much on the art front, but maybe this will inspire!
Time passes, and I did look for a short while and did this pencil sketch.

Nice loose sketch, Tessa. Sorry to hear you have not been painting much. I really enjoyed the programme yesterday - and managed 3 sketches, none of which are very good unfortunately, and started a 4th, but ran out of time. Still to watch the rest of the programme as had other things to do. Will try to get the sketches posted later.
EDIT: here are some of my efforts:

Did anyone else watch PAOTY this year? It was noticeable how many artists are using their phones and IPads to get a grid up to get the accuracy. The winner this year produced an absolutely stunning commissioned portrait, but he did not paint it with the subject in front of him! He did sketches, spent time with the subject and took loads of photos then took it all away with him, played with his photos on the computer and then worked on his huge canvas. The result was the young violinist bathed in the acid yellow light of a Stained glass window. Really beautiful! I was very surprised as his sketches from life seemed somewhat mediocre and his method of scaling up depended largely on using a ruler and could give a wooden result. But none of this mattered as the end result was full of life and light. Perhaps this is the way that portraiture will go…

I agree with much of what you said Linda. The commissioned portrait of Nicola Benedetti was wonderful - I actually “teared up “when I saw it, it had so many facets to it. I also thought that the portrait of his girlfriend was beautiful - contemporary and full of light. And he was so modest and so mature for such a young person. A worthy winner I thought.

I also watched and enjoyed PAOTY this year and agree that Callum was a very worthy winner and I liked his portraits through the rounds and also his other work which they showed a little of in the last programme. I do think he’s a talent and a name for the future which we are likely to hear a lot of.
Linda, was the landscape programme the one where the winner painted a wonderful scene in North Wales? That was also very good and I did like her commission painting though I wouldn’t necessarily have picked her out in previous rounds. I do like both series, though I wish they would show more of the actual painting in progress and less of the chat!
