Anyone else watching? I caught up with episode 2 last night. It's been good so far, some interesting techniques to learn from. It always gets me inspired to have a go at portraiture (though I've been meaning to try a self-portrait for a good few years now). Kay M
I echo your thoughts about having a go at a portrait exactly. Do many pencil figure and face sketches but have never attempted a painted portrait. Perhaps watching Portrait Artist of the Year will inspire me but I remember thinking the same last time it was on (2014?). Enjoy watching the varying techniques though.
Yes, I'm watching and enjoying it. I'm surprised how many are painting from photos they take, some more precisely, when they have the sitter in front of them, instead of "eye balling" as Hockney terms it. I love watching the more classic approaches, artists who have usually come through an atelier and often in Florence. The "Singer Sargent" effect. Last week I went to the BP Portrait exhibition in Edinburgh and was glad to see less photo realism. There were far more "painterly" portraits. I also saw the 2015 winner's (portrait artist of the year, Christian Hook) portrait of Alan Cummings. It was brilliant.
I too was surprised at how many of the artists worked from a photo; I had thought the idea was to paint from life (if I'd known you could work from a photo I might have entered!). It seemed strange when it had all been set up so people could paint from a model. I thought the girl who went through was the right choice, not just because she painted from the model but I thought hers looked the most natural. Marjorie I too went to the BP portrait exhibition and I completely agree with you; I was disappointed in the last exhibition because I thought too many of the works looked photographic. This time there is much more of a range of styles and I like to see creativity in a painting. And Christian Hook's picture is excellent.
I don't understand working from a photograph when you've got a live model - unless your time with the model is excessively limited.... I don't watch Sky, so haven't seen the programme: why would they have done that? I can understand working from a photo of a dog or perhaps a child, because the perishers won't keep still, but if you've got a real human face to play with ..... nope: don't understand.
Sue Perkins .... ah yes. One whom shooting could only improve.
I haven't got Sky or any pals nearby with it. Sue Perkins? Another presenter over the top, bit like Una Stubbs on the Beeb I ranted about.
Bring back Hannah Gordon, that what I say (showing my age!).
I don't know why they include a presenter, a voice over would do adequately and they would save some money as well.
Yes, his portrait was good, a better likeness than the other painters. Sometimes it puzzles me why they chose the winner of each stage. I know it's based on the self portrait submitted at the start, plus the portrait of the sitter done during the four hours of filming. Even so, I thought the judges choice last Tuesday (7th Feb) wasn't the best one on the day.
I was told to enter by another artist who entered the landscape competition..... I bottled it, as I fear I am not at that level yet.
Well I never agree with the judges in any of the shows. I think sometimes they talk a load of twaddle.. I'm ducking now in case somebody throws something at me! I also liked Edward's painting.
