What kind of art sells best right now? EG landscapes, Seascapes abstracts? Google lists Abstract as number 1, and Modern 2nd then Impressionist...
Google needs to be a bit clearer. How many gazillions of types of "Abstract" are there? Modern? Painted last week? Painted in the 20th century? David Hockney set a record for a living artist the other week with a double portrait; so, clearly, Google's got it wrong
valid points alang, i still haven't learned all the styles and I'm a 700 year old vampire queen
I hope it isn't abstracts, because I don't paint abstracts (well, other than accidentally) .... don't have the right sort of brain. Saw a painting entitled Headland a few weeks ago - just planes of colour; and my thought was just "but it isn't, is it? It's just a wodge of paint, randomly placed"; no soul, you see. Literal mind. Hence starving in a garret. Those categories though are a touch on the meaningless side - 'Impressionist', for instance: what on earth does that mean, now? Is it talking about old, and thus genuine, Impressionist paintings? Well, when they come up for auction they're still selling well. Or new paintings better described as figurative? Whatever - adjusting one's painting style or subject to the perceived demands of a market one isn't even an established part of is a bit of a triumph of hope over aesthetic commitment. Or in simpler terms - just because you paint an abstract doesn't mean you're going to sell it; and if you paint just to sell, it's going to show in your work. It's always concerned me that if one happens to hit on a profitable niche, what are the galleries going to expect of you? More of the same, probably - so you're then a prisoner of your own success. Mind you, I wouldn't mind a bit of that for just long enough to bank the first million. It's all very well for these Vampire queens like Aya, but I fear my time on earth is likely to be much shorter than 700 years, and I'd rather like the money now, if it's all the same to Providence.
