Susan Webber has just sent a warning of a scam email she received which apparently came from the SAA. She would like to warn anyone else who may be a member to look out for emails, similar to that below, from people looking to buy work which they have seen on the SAA website. Reason: Buying<u5:p></u5:p><o:p></o:p>Message: Greetings! My name is Leah Port from United Kingdom. I actually observed my wife has been viewing your website on my laptop and i guess she likes your piece of work. I'm also impressed and amazed to have seen your various works too,You are doing a great job. I would like to purchase one ofyour artwork available below and ready for sale as a surprise to my wife on our anniversary. Also, my method of payment is by Bank Cheque as mode of Paymentand i would be glad if you can email me on my private email (<ahref="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected] )if you agreed get back to me with the details below now. Sounds similar to the one Rupert Cordeux warned us about a while back!<u5:p></u5:p><o:p></o:p></ahref="mailto:[email protected]">
"My method of payment is by Bank cheque" - yes, I bet it is. Unfortunately, mine isn't. I wonder why fraudsters so often seem to use Yahoo - a little hard to trace, perhaps?
I had a very similar email a while ago, claimed his wife had seen my work on my website (I don't have a website), but nothing about payment method - just wanted me to contact him (I'm pretty sure it was a him but the name from memory wasn't Leah). No country of origin. Needless to say I didn't contact him and as I've deleted the email I can't check details. Looks like the same scam, and seeing I am in NZ obviously targeting more than one country.
Talking about scams, I have had a letter from SSE who we get our electricity from to say that they have changed their bank account number (I usually pay through my online banking). I'm now wondering if this is a scam and wondered if anyone else has had a letter like this. I think I will have to ring SSE next week to find out if it's correct.
Margaret, definitely ring. There's a similar (but not identical) scam here with invoices emailed as attachments. Hack the email, change the account number on the invoice, and your payment vanishes into cyberspace. I always ring to confirm, as the invoice will be on letterhead but that isn't a protection against this scam. This scam first raised its head with the ChCh rebuild when some pretty substantial builders' invoices were being sent out, but I think it is still happening.
Thing is, tradies here pretty well always email their invoices now, to those of us that have email. Saves on postage. And want to be paid by internet banking (cheques pretty much a thing of the past here), opening the way for the type of fraud I mentioned.
Thanks for posting this warning. I received the exact same email today. Aside from the appalling grammar it rang fake. So did the obligatory time-wasting search and found you. So thank you.
