Looking through very old stuff I found a very old sketch book , a Moleskine of course.   Must be about thirty years old.   I remember it was always in my pocket with a pen for two to five minute sketches of the folk around me.  In airports in queus ,shops and bars.    I don’t think anyone ever noticed and didn’t realise.   I have lots.   These are the real quickies.   Not amazing but fun to do and bring back memories, amyone else got this nasty habit.

It's one thing I can't do - Adebanji takes a sketchbook everywhere with him, and draws people wherever he goes and whenever he finds them: I've got his Addictive Sketcher, and marvel not only at his skill (ever tried to draw or even write anything on a moving bus?) but at his cheek: I'm far too reserved to do this; and while people on the Isle of Wight aren't notably uptight, with the possible exception of myself, they're not used to strangers trying to capture their likeness: "you be after moi soul!  Burn the witch!" I exaggerate; you'll have noticed.  There were a few people who did talk much like that, if I go back far enough - but you'll not find them today; they were very old even then...  Old ladies with hairy moles; old men with pipes stuck in their mouths, reeking of baccy, beer, and sweat - deodorants were the fancy-pants things only  "them dayn from Lunnon" used. Ah Sylvia, what fragrant memories you evoke!  And at such slender provocation, too....
I used to do sketching in garden centre cafes, stations etc, great fun but I haven’t done any recently. I found most people totally unobservant, and if they do look at you, they don't realise what you’re doing and you quickly look at someone/something else if needs be. Most of them are on their phones anyway!
Tessa, I'll take a chance.  I went for a walk today, down to the beach (well, down to the bay full of stones). and wished I HAD taken my sketchbook - though how to capture those colours in the water - they ranged from greenish, to deep blue, to purple: even a camera would have been a good idea, but I forgot to take one.  Silly old fool, but it was a very nice walk, with a refreshing breeze, and those little one-person yachts (which must have a name, but I don't know what it is), shag flying overhead, not willing to settle on his usual post thanks to those yacht-lets: it was lovely - and! (you'll be moved by this) my nice new khaki chinos kept me cool.  I will name the supplier to those who really wish to know....
I can just picture you Robert, chinos et al! I envy you living near the sea.
