Last week I was in a toy shop. A mother was saying to her little girl: "Auntie is buying you a ball, just choose one" Auntie was looking at in delight. She was going to make her 4 to 5years old niece happy. The little girl grabbed a small blue ball. Mum and Auntie told her "No! You must pick a big ball. You must choose a big ball" The little girl was holding tightly her small blue ball and had to beg them and explain that she wanted to keep the ball. They went out of the shop, the girl with the happiest face on earth holding her blue ball while the women could not understand and were saying how stupid the girl was. As oppose to adults, the little girl was not aware of the difference of value between small and big ball. She had decided on what she loved to possess. I do think that there is a strong comparison to draw from this situation with who and why people buy in Art galleries. Some people want a little painting to decorate a corner of a room Some want to add to a collection while other prefers to buy a name. Some are happy with the special little painting that made their heart jump Some are happier with any kind of painting as long as it is "cool" And I can add a collection of "why people want to grab a painting or not" At the end of the day, there is a painting for everybody. We can paint abstract, realistic, contemporary, still lives, landscapes etc... There is a public for all kind of Art. I wonder what is your perception. Do you as an artist buy a painting? If you had the money, would you pay a lot for a special painting? or would you, like myself, buy what makes your heart jump even if it is a cheap little painting from an unknown painter? What would be your choice? Abstract? realistic? Contemporary? etc..
