I just wondered if anyone has used Strathmore vellum paper. I've been using the Bristol Board 300 which I love but I see that they also make Bristol Board Vellum. Would it be suitable for coloured pencils I wonder. If anyone knows anything I would be grateful for any comments.
Sorry I can't help you there, but I would like to know the answer.
These papers vary so much that it's really hard to offer a definitive answer if you've not tried each one individually - I would think a vellum paper should accept coloured pencil well, but so much depends on the degree of gloss/shine on the surface. If I were you, and it were possible, I'd ring the makers to find their opinion or, if they have an interactive website, ask there. If there's too much shine, it's likely to repel coloured pencil - CP requires a certain degree of absorption which a hard-sized vellum paper would not provide. But techniques vary - if you've got on well with Bristol board and CP, this may be the very surface that would yield your best results. Now - this isn't an answer, is it? But perhaps it at least flags up some of the possible issues: if you like a CP technique which relies on colour floating on the surface rather than being absorbed to provide a matte receptor for further work - it could be ideal. But a) ask the makers, b) try it. Then - let us know what you discover.
I've received my vellum Bristol board and have just started a new painting. So far it seems good although I did notice that it doesn't very much like solvent so found I've had to burnish my coloured pencils instead which is no hardship. I will need to do more before recommending it!
