Looking through The Artist magazine every month I see yet another stab at a picture of picturesque canals and old shabby buildings in Venice.
Now I have been to Venice and it is undoubtably a beautiful place, but is it about time we put a moratorium on painting it?
Most of the pictures published show us nothing new about the city, and usually reinforce tired old painting cliches of gondolas, reflections in water, old walls etc.(And a lot of them are painted from photos too, I should think) If an artist has got nothing new to say on a subject (s)he should leave well alone, in my opinion.
I can well understand someone learning about painting would want to copy a picture of Venice, but my advice would be to analyse what you find appealing in it and try to find something similar in your own locality.
Are there any other subjects that should be left well alone because of over use?
