The Ludlow Art Society organises a monthly programme of Plein air painting/sketching days during the summer. Today was the first of the events and we visited Burford House and Gardens near Tenbury Wells and noted for its Clematis Collection.
These plein air days are friendly informal affairs open to members, friends, and in fact anyone who chooses to turn up. There is no tuition - participants are free to do their own thing and stay as long as they wish. I didn’t do a head count but I guess we had about 10 taking part including a friend of one of our members.
I think all Art Societies ought to try to organise events like this. After a friendly welcome we set to work and met up in the restaurant for lunch so that we were able to compare sketches and discuss our methods.
I had a productive morning filling five sides of an A4 sketch book with quick sketches of Pochard ducks around the ornamental pool. I was using a Woolf 4b carbon pencil and Pentel Colour and Wash brushes. In the afternoon I switched to a pastel sketch of the hose Stable Block on an A3 Fabriano Tiziano Sketch Pad. Can’t think of a better way to spend Saturday.
